The winter months are quickly approaching, and if you’re like us, you’ve been spending a lot more time at home these past few months! So, it’s important to get your kids outside while you still can. Check out these 10 fall-inspired ideas to get your kids out from behind their screens and begging to go outside.

  1. Pumpkin Decorating. Head to a pumpkin patch, or local grocery store, and let your kids pick out a pumpkin or two to decorate. For easy (and safe) decorating, load up on markers, stickers, and paint. Setup space outside and let them have at it!
  2. Backyard Camping. Before it gets too cold out, set up camp for your family to enjoy in your own backyard. Make s’mores, tell ghost stories, and enjoy the spooky nighttime sounds. If you have a Green Tree Woodworks swing set, this can even serve as your campsite.
  3. Build a Scarecrow. Challenge your children to build a scarecrow using only items from around, and outside of, the house. Showcase in your front yard for your neighbors to enjoy.
  4. Mums the Word! Pass on your green thumb and plant some mums with your children. If you want to keep them outside longer, encourage them to decorate the pots and planters which will be used.
  5. Build a Fort. If you have a Green Tree Woodworks swing set, you are already halfway there. Use pillows, blankets, and outdoor lighting to make it a space your kids can enjoy during day and night.
  6. Leaf Collection. Task your kid(s) to collect as many leaves as possible and work to identify what type of leaves they are.
  7. Scavenger Hunt. Create a list of nature items most applicable to the fall season and send your kids off to collect. Perhaps even hide some treats for them to find.
  8. Fall Art. Using paper and crayons, show your kids how to trace leaves to admire their intricate details. Or, challenge them to create a masterpiece using only yellow, brown, red, and orange items found outside.
  9. Raking Leaves. While we may see it as a chore, kids often see it as an opportunity! Encourage your kids to rake the largest leaf piles to jump in! Or, provide them with bags to stuff and decorate to look like pumpkins.
  10. Enjoy a Swing Set. A swing set is a perfect place for your child to cozy up, drink hot chocolate, or burn off that extra energy. Explore the variety of wooden swing sets and playsets we have to offer.

When choosing the perfect swing set for your child, there is a lot to consider! Playsets come in all shapes and sizes and offer a variety of accessories and finishes, but not all are built to last. Keep reading to learn more about the differences between wooden and metal swing sets, and what to consider when looking for your perfect set.

If you’re already set on a customizable wooden swing set, check out our wide variety of models.

Now let’s get down to the differences.

Weather-Friendly
Unlike wooden swing sets, metal swing sets fluctuate with the temperatures outside. In hot summer months, metal swing sets can be extremely hot to the touch (especially if they receive direct sunlight) and can cause some discomfort to play on. Of course, the same happens in the winter with freezing temperatures. Both materials, however, if quality-constructed, can withstand your everyday typical weather woes.

Maintenance
Between the two, wooden swing sets require more maintenance if you really want them to last a lifetime. We recommend for best performance to re-stain a wooden set every 4 years. Metal swing sets on the other hand need minimal maintenance other than a fresh new coat of paint every once in a while.

Aesthetics
There really isn’t a clear winner here since aesthetics are a personal choice. A wooden swing set’s natural material allows it to blend in more with your backyard setting. While the main structure is made of wood, a pop of color (or two or three) can be added with the selection of your accessories. Metal swing sets, on the other hand, stand out a bit more due to their manufactured materials. However, they can be painted whatever color the owner desires which some people prefer!

Durability
While metal swing sets are often selected for commercial playgrounds due to their durability and lower need for maintenance, they aren’t always the best choice for residential needs. Depending on the quality and steel gauge, metal swing sets can somethings bend in shape or begin rusting and corroding earlier than you would like. Wooden swing sets may require more maintenance throughout the years, but if this is kept up, and the wooden swing set is constructed of high-quality materials such as the No. 1 Grade Yellow Southern Pine we use, it will bring happiness for years to come.

Customizable
Wooden swing sets and playsets allow you to customize and add-on features throughout the years. For example, the area underneath your playset tower can hold a tire swing for the first few years and then be replaced with a picnic table for crafts, games, and lunchtime. Metal swing sets on the other hand aren’t as easy to customize without having to be innovative on your own.

Regardless of which type of swing set you choose, safety should always be your number one priority. At Green Tree Woodworks, we believe that “Quality Comes First” when it comes to the material, construction, and installation of your swing set or playset. Other than our exceptional swing sets, “wood” you like to know what really sets us apart? Learn more here.

Don’t let your small, outdoor space get in the way of purchasing a playset for your child. Just like yards, they come in all shapes and sizes! Learn how to customize your swing set to best utilize your outdoor space.

Build Up

First, we encourage you to get the idea that “bigger is better” out of your head. Give consideration to playsets that are built tall, and not wide. For example, Model 3400A has a play tower, telescope and steering wheel up top, and a tire swing below. Builds like this are a great solution for small backyards, or even outdoor patios in urban settings, and guarantee the same amount of fresh-air fun!

Transform Over Time

Working with a company like Green Tree Woodworks, gives you the ability to transform your swing set over time. Today, many playsets are pre-designed to include all of the bells and whistles at once, which often makes them larger in size. A set that allows you to switch out its components will allow you to save space and evolve to best fit your child’s outdoor adventure needs. Check out some of the features that can be easily switched out.

Add-on Accessories

Customizable, space-saving accessories take up little space, add a punch of fun and help jump-start the imagination. Popular add-on accessories usually include binoculars, cargo nets, rock walls, bubble panels, megaphones, fireman’s poles, tick-tac-toe boards, telescopes, and ship’s wheels to name a few! Check out the possibilities!

Green Tree Woodworks offers a variety of pre-designed swing sets and playsets for you to choose from. We also offer the ability to customize your selections — this is especially useful when you need one tailored to fit your space! If you don’t see what you’re looking for, feel free to contact us!

While most of us look forward to that first snow, the winter months can also bring that unwanted cold weather, freezing rain, and ice. If you are a backyard swing set owner, these upcoming weeks are an important time to begin taking action to winterize your swing set or playhouse. Keep reading to learn our top tips for keeping your swing set in tip-top shape during the winter months that lie ahead.

Complete a Maintenance Check-Up
To keep your swing set in its best condition, frequently inspect your set for any issues, and address them before the winter months hit. Some things to check for can include loose screws, cracked wood or plastic, rust, mold, and/or insect damage. You can also note any normal wear and tear that may need to be fixed. By addressing these issues when they arise, you are preventing larger problems down the line.

Hold a Quick Clean-Up
It’s important to clean off your swing set before the winter months set in. Wet leaves and other debris can soak into the wood causing undesirable mildew damage or mold. Once your swing set is clear, wash it down with a hose and mild soap. If you choose to use a power washer, make sure to use a gentle setting as it may damage the wood. Keeping your swing set clean will help the wood keep its appearance over time and make restaining and resealing easier.

Reseal and Restain
If you have a wooden swing set or playhouse, one of the best things you can do to enhance its lifespan is to consistently seal and restain it. We recommend every 4 years, but you can do it more often (1-2 years) if you prefer. There are all sorts of sealant and stain options, so make sure to check in with your manufacturer on what they suggest.

Cover What You Can
If you live in an area that has very cold and snowy winters, and you are certain your kid won’t be eager to play outside, you may want to consider covering the entire swing set with a tarp or perhaps just portions of it. This will help keep it safe from the elements and extend its longevity. Another option is to remove parts of your swing set that run the risk of being weighed down by heavy snow, such as the slide, swings, rope ladder, or playhouse roofing.

Winterizing your swing set is one of the best ways to maintain its appearance, ensure your child’s safety, and lengthen its overall lifespan. By following these useful tips, you are one step closer to creating memories that last a lifetime.

Playing outside has a variety of advantages for children, however, simply swinging on a swing has its very own list of benefits!

Motor Skills & Coordination
In order to swing, there are a lot of physical responsibilities your body must be able to complete simultaneously to be successful. Not only does a child have to learn to “pump” their legs, but they also have to coordinate the movement of their legs with their arms and hands as they grip onto the ropes and leverage their bodies forward to reach higher heights.

Social Development
While swinging can be done on its own, it can also be very social. If there are only a few swings available for multiple kids to play on, they must learn how to share and take turns—heightening their communication and cooperation skills. This exercise also helps build patience.

Sensory Development
One of the greatest joys of swinging on a swing are the sensory benefits it brings. Reaching higher heights, feeling the wind hit your face, and experiencing your stomach dip all help children develop the ability to acclimate to different sensations—this also helps their focus in the long-run.

Physical Health
Swinging is a great source of physical activity that helps increase strength and endurance! While muscles in the arms, legs, and the body’s core are actively engaged, the body’s joints, tendons, and ligaments are also being conditioned.

Endorphin-Rising
Swinging, and climbing to new heights, is a natural endorphin booster and is guaranteed to bring a smile to a child’s face. Just think, “When was the last time you saw a child frowning while on the swings?”

Green Tree Woodworks offers a variety of pre-designed swing sets and playsets for you to choose from. We also offer the ability to customize your selections — this includes a wide variety of swing types to best fit your child’s age and needs!
